Scholastic Book Fair
Everyone is invited to attend our Book Fair being held in the library from Monday December 3rd to Friday December 7th.  It is a great opportunity to purchase books and at the same time support our library.  For every $10 spent at the Book Fair, up to $6 goes back to our school.  This allows us to purchase new books and build our library collection.  The Fair will be open Monday to Thursday from 9:10 am to 12:40 pm and from 2:00 pm to 3:20 pm for classroom visits.  A newsletter with a schedule of classroom visits and a preview flyer will be sent home with students on Friday November 30th.  Mrs. Tompkins-London is looking forward to seeing everyone at this exciting literacy event!

Transitioning to High School Event @ DSPS

David Suzuki Public School is proud to offer an event for parents and students in grades 6, 7 & 8 on Thursday, November 22, 2018 from 6:00-7:30 pm in our gymnasium. This session, entitled 'Transitioning to High School', is intended to support families as they transition from the elementary grades to high school. Our Elementary Itinerant Transition/Guidance Teacher, Alison Campbell, will be available to answer questions from parents and students, along with former students from various high schools. Discussion will focus on, but not be limited to, decision making skills in our children, resiliency, and the differences between Academic versus Applied courses. We look forward to supporting our families as they embark on the next chapter of their educational journey!

Information for Parents on the Legalization of Cannabis

As of October 17, 2018, it will be legal for individuals 19 and older to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis. It remains illegal for anyone under the age of 19. This is the same as the minimum age for the sale of tobacco and alcohol in Ontario.
Regardless of age, cannabis is not allowed on school property or at school-related events at any time.

It is illegal for anyone regardless of age to smoke or vape any substance, including cannabis:

at school, on school grounds, and all public areas within 20m of these grounds
on children’s playgrounds and public areas within 20m of playgrounds
in child care centres, or where an early years program is provided
in places where home child care is provided even if children aren’t present

There will be consequences for students if they are believed to be in possession or under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or cannabis. Suspension will be considered. There are exceptions if the medicinal use of cannabis is outlined in the student’s Health Care Plan.

If a student gives alcohol or cannabis to anyone under the age of 19, the school will contact police, suspend the student and consider expulsion.

In YRDSB, we want families and students to be informed about the facts of cannabis legalization. To support this learning, you may find the following resources helpful . You can also request a hard copy through the school office.

We will continue to provide students with information and support to make positive and healthy decisions.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school’s administration.

Kid's Kitchen September Update

Kids Plus Accident Insurance

Kids PlusAccident Insurance

For your convenience, we have made arrangements for families to voluntarily purchase student accident insurance through the Kids Plus Accident Insurance program, underwritten by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc.
Kids Plus Accident Insurance offers protection against the unexpected costs of injury from accidents, and is
especially valuable for families who:

· do not have medical or dent al plans,
· have limited plans, as it may help supplement health and dental benefits, or
· Have active children who enjoy sports and outdoor activities.

For complete plan details, please visit kidsplus.ca.

2018-2019 The Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance school distribution program has moved online!

All schools can now access kidsplus.ca/resources for information about Kids Plus™ which they can use on their respective websites, e-newsletters and social media. The main website at kidsplus.ca will continue to be available for parents to purchase coverage, access claims forms and full plan information online. Additionally, for 2018 Kids Plus™ decided to take their mission to be green one step further by discontinuing distribution of all Kids PlusNotices (Brochures) to reduce the overall paper use.

Please note that effective this September 1st, there will also be some changes to the Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance policy that will impact the Active Plan holders. Permanent Total Disability coverage will be reduced from $360,000 to $100,000 and Dismemberment or Total & Permanent Loss of Use from
$200,000 to $100,000. These changes were made in order to allow Kids Plusto continue to offer the benefits families use most, such as dental treatment and eyewear, with no increase in premiums.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our new promotional landing page, our Kids Plus™ Client Service Specialists would be happy to assist you. You may contact Kids Plus™ at their Client Service toll-free line at 1-800-556-7411 or email kidsplus@ia.ca.
